Mrs. Kausch's SUPA Biology class and Mr. O'Brien's Science Research class recently took a field trip in which they toured the research facilities of the Center of Functional Genomics and the UAlbany Cancer Research labs.

Questar III/ BOCES acted as a liaison for the field trip and Dr. Srudar V. Chittur guided Hoosic Valley students through the tours of the Neural Stem Institute, The Pharmaceutical/Nanoparticle Institute and the Genetics/Cancer research lab of UAlbany located in Rensselaer.  Students met with several different researchers during the 3 hour tour and they described their research goals and the technology that they are using to achieve those goals....one researcher is working on a cure for macular degeneration and another is growing neural stem cells to help cure spinal cord injuries!

The tour sparked a real interest in several of the students and one of the Science research students was able to make a contact to help her in her research project. Several of our seniors are going into the biomedical and biochemistry fields and this opportunity showed them several of the many possible careers they can choose from.
