Original Posting - 3/11/2021: We are moving forward with planning a prom tentatively scheduled for May 15, 2021. At this time we are using the NYS guidelines for receptions for in person and catered events to aid in our planning, however we are hopeful that more specific guidance regarding school proms becomes available. There are tremendous challenges we are facing in the planning. It is our understanding based on this guidance that attendees will need to be tested for COVID - 19 beforehand. Attendees would need to show proof of a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the get-together, show proof of a negative rapid test within six hours of the event or have proof of two COVID-19 vaccinations. They must wear masks at all times when not eating or drinking. Mingling and dancing will be restricted. We are currently restricted to only having 150 people attend the prom, including chaperones. We want the students to be able to celebrate but it seems near impossible to do in the traditional fashion.

The biggest concern and challenge at this time is the testing management. We have had preliminary conversations with our school nurse discussing things such as: who will perform the tests and if our school will do so; where can we obtain the tests, the cost of the tests and again, the management of the results. We are also required to submit a plan to the county health department on how we will comply with the guidance for approval. As with everything that has happened in the past year, this could all very well change. However from a planning standpoint, it is difficult. We recognize that this is also challenging for families and our students who want to buy dresses and reserve tuxedos.

We have had several conversations on how to make things equitable but also prioritize the senior class as they were not able to have their junior prom in 2020. We have made the decision to move to a senior prom. We hope this allows the seniors to have an opportunity to have their prom court and in turn allow the junior class the same opportunity next school year. Freshman and Sophomores will not be able to attend like in past years. Because of the uncertainty we will not have traditional ticket sales for the prom at this point. Instead, we will offer a sign up pushed out by class level. This would be a singular sign up, no option to sign up a guest or “date” within the school. Seniors and Juniors can indicate whether they would like to bring an outside guest, if we can accommodate them.

The priority for sign up is:

  • Seniors
  • Seniors with outside guests *
  • Juniors
  • Juniors with outside guests *
* Juniors or Seniors now have the option to indicate if they would like to bring a HV sophomore or freshman, if we are able to accommodate them as a guest, on the interest form.  They will be considered as a guest of an upperclassman. *

We will use this sign up to be able to gauge interest, take a look at the numbers, prioritize and possibly use it for test management if necessary. We will not be collecting money at this point for ticket sales but anticipate the cost of tickets will be approximately $65. As things develop we will certainly do our best to inform everyone. As things become more clear and defined, we will be able to collect money. To get a ticket to the prom students and outside guests will need to be “cleared” and paid. We know that this is not ideal and please understand that we are working very hard to meet the guidance and do what we can do safely for our students. With so much uncertainty we can understand if you would opt to not to participate, but please know we are trying to accommodate those who want to, especially our seniors. Your patience and support is appreciated.
