Friday's COVID Update

A message from District Superintendent, G. Michael Apostol

Following up on yesterday's announcements, I wanted to assure you that we have been doing our best to take precautionary measures as soon as we hear of any possible exposures, before we even receive test results and begin contact tracing with the Rensselaer County Health Department.

We were notified this afternoon that another member of our Elementary School community tested positive. They were not in school today.

Once we heard the individual at our school was a contact of a positive, we had them quarantine at home, and we identified any possible contacts of that individual. Those individuals were kept out of the common areas and were sent home on a separate bus from other students just in case. These are early and proactive measures that the school enacted voluntarily to do everything we can to stop the spread.

The individual that was being tested was not in the building yesterday. Just in case, we had our custodial staff do a deep clean of the areas where any contacts of the case had been during the day. We have asked those potential contacts to stay home just in case. At this point, we will be working closely with the DOH to conduct contact tracing and they will decide who will be quarantined. If your student has been asked to quarantine, this does not mean that they will get sick. We have been taking all of the precautionary measures of social distancing, wearing masks, and hand sanitizing, so the risk is low, we just don't want to take any chances with the health and safety of our students and staff.

We are working with the Rensselaer County Department of Health and have completed contact tracing. The families of any students (as well as the faculty/staff) will be notified if they are considered a close contact of the positive case and will be directed to quarantine for 14 days and to follow DOH recommendations.

If your student is required to quarantine, according to the New York State Department of Health Guidelines, they should:

• stay home for the entire 14 days (no school, no stores, no public gatherings, no visits to friends, no playing in the neighborhood)
• plan to stay in one part of the home separate from other members of the household
• not interact with other students/community members
• be monitored for symptoms of COVID including fever, cough, shortness of breath etc.

A negative COVID test does not change the 14-day quarantine requirement.

Read more on the CDC Website about When to Quarantine.

The health and safety of the students, teachers and staff in our school community remains our top priority.

By continuing to practice social distancing, proper mask-wearing, handwashing and disinfecting both in school and in the larger community, we will continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic together.

Please encourage your student to continue to practice social distancing and mask-wearing outside of school any time they are in a public setting or visiting with friends.

All students and employees must continue to:

• Monitor your temperature and any symptoms.
• Practice frequent hand washing.
• Wear a face mask while in school, at school events or after-school activities, in public, or in close proximity to another individual.
• NOT come to school if exhibiting any COVID-related symptoms.
• Fill in the Health Check honestly, and notify the COVID Coordinator if there are any changes

If your student develops symptoms, takes a COVID test, or tests positive, please contact Michelle Przedwiecki, MPH, the COVID Coordinator at 753-4458 x2112 or mprzedwiecki@hoosicvalley.org.

Please note that privacy laws restrict us from disclosing or confirming any personally identifiable information. We cannot and will not identify anyone who has tested positive.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of continuing to be conscientious and careful outside of the school to ensure your student’s health and safety.

We continue to work closely with the Rensselaer County Department of Health and follow their guidance. Thank you all for your cooperation during this uncertain time.
