Returning to the Garden

Returning to the Garden

Students are learning some great skills while enjoying the beautiful weather in the school garden. In March, Mr. Lefebvre's students planted seed trays with tomatoes, peppers, basil, lettuce and zinnias, growing them under lights in the classroom until they were large enough to transplant outside. They watered & weeded before summer vacation and are now enjoying the harvest! The tomatoes & peppers are being used in the classroom kitchen, along with potatoes they planted from tubers, and carrots planted from seed- both blue ribbon winners at the Schaghticoke Fair!

To take advantage of the cooler fall weather, the students planted snow peas & a lettuce mix this week, after enriching their planting bed with compost. They learned about germination, pollination & how decomposes work to break down vegetable material into compost. They are also experiencing what every gardener know: everything tastes better when you’ve grown it yourself!
