Hoosic Valley’s K-8 ELA teachers have been hard at work. Over the summer, 37 teachers attended a 4-day Professional Development Institute through Columbia University’s Teachers College. The trainings focused on learning about and supporting Reading Workshop and the Reading Units of Study in their classrooms. Each day, teachers learned about the different components of readers workshop; this was done in a variety of ways-with a partner, in a small group and/or whole group. This allowed for teachers to work and collaborate within their grade level cohorts and across grade levels. The expertise of the leaders helped propel teachers’ literacy instruction, as well as help invigorate, empower and encourage teachers to continuously move onward and upward in understanding the teaching of reading workshop. To continue their learning from the Homegrown Institute, 17 teachers from grades K-7 went to NYC to attend the Saturday Reunion at Columbia University’s Teachers College on October 19th. This was a day filled with mini professional development conferences based on current teaching practices.

Topics included: developing state-of-the-art classroom libraries, teaching towards social justice, phonics, raising the levels of book clubs, independence and agency with revisions, supporting units of study, managing workshop instruction, teaching K-2 kids to write persuasive speeches and reviews, argument reading and writing, the best new fiction books and writing about reading.

Great job Hoosic Valley Teachers!  Your continued learning is sure to pay off in the classroom.
