Our elementary students did a great job at the Character Counts/Holiday Concert on Friday.  Everyone was looking very festive - their smiles and enthusiasm were contagious!

Along with holiday songs our students were reminded about some important character traits. One of the virtues that is important to us here at Hoosic Valley, because it helps make our school and our world a kinder and more peaceful place, is empathy.

Empathy is looking at someone’s face and body and asking yourself: “What is he feeling right now?”

Empathy is asking yourself, “What is his point of view?”

Empathy is asking yourself, “How can I help?” or “What is a kind thing to say?”.

Compassion is empathy in action! First you need to have empathy and THEN you need to act! You show compassion when you act in ways that will make others feel comfortable and happy. You show compassion when you are a good listener when others are talking. You show compassion when you listen to someone who is sad or encourage someone who is struggling to do something that’s hard for them – either when they are struggling to learn something new OR when they are having problems at home or in school.

When you show empathy and compassion you will be a better friend, family member, and classmate. And that's what makes Hoosic Valley great!

Along with the songs and character messages our students in grades two through four shared some great stories about their favorite things about winter, how they show compassion and how they decorate for the season. Our younger students told us what they would do if they could fly, how they show compassion and their favorite holiday traditions.  Thanks to our students that shared, you did a great job!
