Thanks to the Hoosic Valley Community Partners, Schaghticoke Entertainment Committee and Schaghticoke Team Builders for hosting a great Harvest Fest and Melrose Mile.  Just another example of the fabulous communities that make up Hoosic Valley.

Records fall at The Melrose Mile!

The Schaghticoke Town hall was the place to be for the 7th Annual Melrose Mile. Over 60 kids (the largest amount ever) ranging from ages 2 to 13 laced up their sneakers on Saturday to take on the revamped course. Some last-minute adjustments were made to the 3870-foot course due to overflow parking that ended up on the course. Race officials “Cheeseburger Bob” aka Bobby Keyes, Town council member John Rustin, former marine Donald R. Espey Jr, Dem Neary, Paige Gela and Reilly Kinnicut were out on the course observing and making sure runners stayed the course and no one was left behind. This year’s race was dedicated to 2-time runner up Dillion Speanburg who had to pass this year under his doctors’ advice. At the starting line all participants yelled out “Do it for Dillion” and off they went. The start was the usual mad dash to the first turn with a couple of young runners hitting the turf. After some tears were shed, they were up and running again. At the finish line in a course record 4 minutes, it was Ethan Sheldon running for Sheldon’s Pumpkin’s. Ethan defended his title and became the first two-time winner in the overall champion division. There was a tie for first in the boy’s division as Abram Mayer running for Copses Farms and Owen Simpson running for Ozzy both crossed the finish line at the same time. They then went to a sudden death sprint off and Simpson just edged Mayer to take home the Rustin Trophy. On the girl’s side Ella Waldron running for Thunder Struck 99 took home first place winning by over 20 seconds to her closest competitor. In the tradition of the event all the runners received an apple thanks to Jamie and Judy Kennelly of Lakeview Orchards and bottled water from the Hoosic Valley Booster Club. While the runners enjoyed the post-race refreshments, registration officials Judy Espey, Melissa Simpson, and Crystal Schram, had to get the times and registration forms all in proper order for the award ceremony. At the award ceremony, Dillion Speanburg handed out the trophies to our three division winners. The remaining winners were presented with Melrose Mile Medals donated by The Hoosic Valley Athletic Association by Association President Josh Gela.
