State Qualifier - Bowling

At the varsity Girls Bowling Sectionals Leigha Henkel bowled as an individual and qualified to compete on a composite team representing Section 2 at the State Championship in Syracuse, NY on March 9th 2019.  This year there was a rule change for bowling sectionals that allowed girls who bowl on a boys team, at schools that don't offer a girls bowling team, to bowl at girl's sectionals as an "individual."   As a result of the recent rule change, many girl's from the area took the opportunity  to bowl at Girls Sectionals as individuals to try and qualify for the Section 2 composite team.  This opportunity only applied if they averaged over 170 for the season.  Leigha's average is a 199.  Choosing to bowl individually, instead of with her team at the boy's sectional competition, was a stressful choice but in the end her decision paid off.   Leigha out bowled most of her female peers at the Girl's Sectional competition on February 7th.  The girls competing were from many small and big schools across Section 2.

Leigha knew that if her score ranked as one of the top 6 for the day she had an opportunity to represent Section 2 and bowl at states.  She ranked 2nd out of the 6 girls who qualified for the composite team with a high triple of 631 pins, high game of 233 and overall pin total for 6 games of 1180 pins.   She will be competing on March 9th at the state competition with Jaidyn Rose of Middleburgh (1,197), Lauren Buess of Guilderland (1,167), Carolyn Shultes of Middleburgh (1,139), Katie Polomaine of Schenectady (1,116), and Hannah Jacobs of Lansingburgh (1,110).

Good luck to Leigha and all the section 2 Athletes with your state competitions.
