For more than seven decades, the Society of Women Engineers(SWE) has given women engineers a unique place and voice within the engineering industry. Their organization is centered around a passion for their members’ success and continues to evolve with the challenges and opportunities reflected in today’s exciting engineering and technology specialties. The New York Capital District (NYSCD) of SWE was founded in 2002 with the mission of bringing together professional engineering women in the Capital District region.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) strives to inform young women of the opportunities open to them in the fields of engineering and science, and to encourage them to attain higher levels of education.  In support of this objective, the New York State Capital District SWE Section awarded its Certificates of Merit for the 20th year on Thursday, May 18th at the Marriott in Albany.

The Certificate of Merit is an achievement award presented to female students completing their junior year of high school.  The recipients are chosen by the faculty of the math, science, and technology departments and the administration of their schools on the basis of (1) their achievements in math, science, and pre-engineering (if available), (2) their extracurricular activities related to STEM and leadership skills demonstrations, and (3) their desires for a future career in engineering, math, or science. The award consists of a certificate that can be recorded on college and scholarship applications.

This year Katrine LeStage, daughter of Nathan & Amanda LeStage and Sophia Squires, daughter of Michael & Anduena Squires,  were nominated to represent Hoosic Valley Jr Sr High School.  Once the students are nominated they are offered an opportunity to write an essay to compete for an additional Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) scholarship that comes with a $700.00 check.  Of the 33 Merit Award winners 5 were chosen as OAA Recipients.

We are extremely proud to announce that both Katrine & Sophia received the OAA Scholarship at the 2023 Merit Award Dinner.
