Meet the Academic Top 10 for the Class of 2012

Academic Top TenOlivia Smith is Valedictorian for the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Olivia spent her senior year at SUNY at Albany for the New Visions Scientific Research and World Health program. Olivia played volleyball throughout high school and was captain during her senior year. She was chosen to be News Channel 13 Athlete of the Week her junior season. Off the court she was president of the graduating class, Student Council, National Honor Society and Photography Club. She was also the vice president of the Art Club. She is a HOBY NYE alum and is an active leader within her community. She has received various academic awards throughout high school including the outstanding student award. She also received the New American Scholarship Provost award at Arizona State University. She will be attending Arizona State University this coming fall majoring in Earth and Environmental Studies, but will be focusing on meeting her Pre-Med requisites. She will be pursuing a career in medicine to bring together her two passions, helping others and the environment. Olivia is the daughter of Laura & Bryan Smith of Schaghticoke.


Academic Top TenEthan Caiazza is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr High School. Ethan is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society and a Scholar Athlete in football, basketball & baseball. He represented Hoosic Valley at Boys State in June 2019. Ethan has been accepted at and will be attending Skidmore College in the fall of 2020. He plans on going into the field of Medicine. Ethan is the son of Dawn & Gerald Caiazza of Schaghticoke, NY.

Academic Top TenIsaac Bunk is ranked third in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Isaac is a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club and for many years Ski Club. He is a recipient of the Clarkson University High School Achievement award, a Clarkson University Merit Scholarship and the RIT Presidential Scholarship. Isaac will be attending Clarkson University in their Chemical Engineering Program. He is the son of Linda & Andrew Bunk of Schaghticoke, New York.

Academic Top TenAshlyn Chartier is ranked fourth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Ashlyn is a member and Vice President of the National Honor Society, as well as a member of Student Council and their Secretary. She was on the Varsity Track and Field team all four years of high school and Varsity Basketball for 3 years of high school. She was recently honored as a Section 2 Girls Basketball Scholar Athlete for the 2019-2020 season. Ashlyn is a four year scholar athlete, and has received numerous awards for her leadership, sportsmanship, and academic achievement. She will be attending the University at Albany in the fall of 2020 and is keeping her major options open at this time. Ashlyn is the daughter of Leanne & Steven Chartier of Melrose, New York.

Academic Top TenRory Field is ranked fifth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Rory has been a competitive gymnast in the Junior Olympic Gymnastics Program - Level 10 Nationals. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous academic honors. Outside of school she is an active member of the Transfiguration Youth Group. While Rory has been accepted at both Penn State and West Virginia University, she is currently undecided on which of those two colleges she will attend to pursue a degree in Forensic Science. Rory is the daughter of Heather and Greg Field of Valley Falls, New York.

Academic Top TenSamuel Salvati is ranked sixth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Sam has been a member of the Odyssey of the Mind team since the fifth grade and enjoys the critical thinking and analytical challenges presented each year. He is a section leader in the Senior Band and has been on High Honor Roll since the eighth grade. Sam plans on pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering at either Clarkson, Cornell or Rochester Institute of Technology - where he won the RIT Presidential Scholarship as a Junior. He is the son of Laura Salvati of Schaghticoke, New York and Michael Salvati of Brunswick, New York.

Academic Top TenKylin Hemmings is ranked seventh in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Kylin is a member of National Honor Society and the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Outside of school she is involved in 4-H, horseback riding and the FFA. She was a 2019 recipient of the Society Of Women Engineers Merit Award. Kylin will be attending Hudson Valley Community College for two years with plans to transfer after to Cornell University to study Veterinary Medicine and become an Equine/Bovine Veterinarian. She is the daughter of Kristy & Kyle Hemmings of Johnsonville, New York.

Academic Top TenDylan Hart is ranked eighth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. He has been on High Honor Roll since the ninth grade. Dylan is a member of both the Varsity Football and Varsity Track & Field teams and is a Scholar Athlete. He will be pursuing a Business Degree to someday open his own Sports Training Facility. He has been accepted at Siena College, Juniata College, Bryant University and Louisiana State University. While he is waiting to hear from other colleges before making his final decision, his top choice is Louisiana State University. Dylan is the son of Amanda Hart of Latham, New York and Jason Hart of Melrose, New York.

Academic Top TenShannon Brown is ranked ninth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is the recipient of many academic awards in both Science and Social Studies. Shannon’s participation in Varsity Softball and Volleyball has led to several honors: Scholar Athlete for both sports, First Team All Star two years in a row for Volleyball and second team All Star for Softball. Outside of school she played on two travel softball teams and one travel volleyball team. Shannon will be attending the University of South Carolina, majoring in Psychology and ideally would like a career at a federal agency. Shannon is the daughter of Kristi and Sean Brown of Melrose,New York.

Academic Top TenSarah Corey is ranked tenth in the Class of 2020 at Hoosic Valley Jr./Sr. High School. She has been involved in Odyssey Of The Minds for ten years and her team advanced to the State Level of competition three times. Sarah plans on attending SUNY Plattsburgh for a degree in Social Work and continuing on to Graduate School to obtain a Master Degree. Ultimately Sarah wants to become a School Social Worker and/or provide private counseling. Sarah is the daughter of Connie and Clay Corey of Johnsonville, New York.
