Writing Olympics 2020

What is Writing Olympics?
It's been a part of Hoosic Valley Elementary School for well over a decade. During January, on their own or during class, students write and submit creative pieces of writing. Volunteers edit (and, when needed, type) the submissions, gather them into a book that's organized by grade, and have the book printed. On April 30, students come to school in the evening, read their stories out loud to a small group, get recognized on stage for their participation, and have a chance to win some gift certificates and other prizes too.

Why do we do this?
The students love it! The chance for them to have their work published in a book alongside their friends' and classmates' stories is really exciting! It also gives students a chance to be brave and share their creative talents by reading their writing out loud.

What should my students write?
The choice is theirs: we've seen poems, fictional stories about mythical creatures, superhero adventures, mysteries, biographies, recollections about family members or favorite pets, holiday and vacation memories, career plans, and SO much more.

What do I need to do?
Simply encourage your students to submit something! Even if they don't want to write, they can submit art for the cover art contest (paper available in the art room and main office).

NEW! This year, PTO is offering a teacher/classroom prize! The two classrooms with the highest participation (one for grades K-2, one for grades 3-6) will each win a $25 Scholastic Books credit.

Writers' Workshops, just for Writing Olympics authors!
Wed. Jan. 29 at 6:30pm, and Sat. Feb. 1 at 10:00am at the Diver Library in Schaghticoke. The librarians will offer extra inspiration and help students to finesse their stories!

Other details I need to know?
• Remind students to submit final drafts which have been proofread (by parents or an adult).
•All Writing Olympic stories are due to the main office on February 7. Cover art can be included there as well, or students can submit directly to Ms. Baumeister.
• You're invited to the celebration! Thursday, April 30 at 6:30pm. If you'd like to host a room of student readers that night, or help with proofreading stories, please email us.
